  Born Tafari Makonnen. Later Ras (duke, prince) Tafari Makonnen. Becomes Negus (king) of Shoa in 1928 and then Negus Negesti (King of Kings, Emperor), after the death of Empress Zauditu in 1930, with the regnal name of “Heile Selassie” (Power of Trinity).

  His full title in office is His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, King of Kings of Ethiopia, Elect of God.

  He is also known as Janhoy, Talaqu Meri, and Abba Tekel to Ethiopians, and HIM (His Imperial Majesty), Jah, and Jah Rastafari to the Rastafari.
